Cocaine Charges
Facts about cocaine and its use
In its purest form, cocaine is white. The commonly found powder cocaine is a salt, usually cocaine hydrochloride. Street level dealers frequently sell powdered cocaine that has been diluted or "cut" with filler products to increase their profits. We usually see cocaine that has been cut with baking soda, sugar, and occasionally a local anesthetic such as lidocaine. In this area we rarely see cocaine that has been cut with methamphetamine, but it does happen. Adulterated cocaine frequently is off-white or slightly pink
Crack cocaine
The color of crack cocaine varies considerably and usually depends on the origin of the cocaine used, the method of preparation (usually with ammonia or baking soda), and the types of impurities or adulterants. Sometimes it is off-white but will usually be a cream color, light yellow, or very light brown in appearance. Crack cocaine may be crumbly or quite hard, but it often resembles an oversized sugar cookie.
Crack cocaine is usually consumed by smoking. The nickname "crack" came from the crackling sound produced when this form of cocaine containing impurities is burning. Some users rub the powder along the gum line or onto a cigarette filter, which is then smoked. This numbs the gums and teeth, which explains the nicknames "numbies," "gummers," and "cocoa puffs."
Effects of cocaine
Orally administered cocaine will take approximately half an hour to enter the bloodstream. The "high" from this form of administration is reached in about one hour and continues for about one hour thereafter.
Insufflation (snorting) cocaine shortens the time needed to achieve a high. Some effects are usually felt in five to ten minutes. Maximum psychotropic effects are felt in twenty minutes, and maximum physiological effects are reached in about forty minutes. The high continues for about forty to sixty minutes.
