What does it mean to "manufacture cocaine"?
In general manufacturing a drug means producing, preparing, compounding, converting, or processing a controlled substance either by directly or indirectly extracting the drug from the substances of natural origin, or by means of chemical synthesis. This includes packaging or repackaging of the substance or labeling or relabeling its container.
In the case of cocaine, manufacturing charges are most frequently brought against those who are "cooking" crack cocaine, usually on their kitchen stoves.
Penalties for manufacturing cocaine
Possession of cocaine carries a possible punishment of two to fifteen years in prison and a fine for the first offense and from five to thirty years for a second offense. The penalties for manufacturing cocaine are more serious, and most trial judges will routinely impose longer sentences of actual incarceration. A first conviction for manufacturing cocaine requires a sentence of five to thirty years, while a second conviction will result in a sentence of ten to forty years OR life in prison.
